The brand sits under Good Brands, the company Li founded to develop long-term, ingredient-focused projects across beauty and wellness. Sujet is its second brand and its first move into fragrance. Sujet launched in 2025 with a single release, Le Foin, and has added one new fragrance every few months since.

This is not a perfume house built for wide distribution. Sujet sits firmly within the world of French niche perfume brands that trade reach for a strong point of view. In that sense, it feels closer to the smaller houses that shaped the fascinating history of perfume than to anything you’d find at a department store counter.

How Sujet Perfumes Are Made: The Member Model and Small-Batch Production

It’s a slower system than most fragrance launches, and that seems to be the point. Sujet has said that it is prioritizing word-of-mouth and scarcity rather than trying to maximize volume.

Production runs are small and tied to harvest cycles rather than traditional demand forecasts. Sujet works directly with French agricultural producers for its raw materials, so a fragrance can’t simply be manufactured faster when demand increases.

That constraint is part of what gives each release its specificity. Three fragrances in, Sujet still hasn’t repeated an ingredient concept.

The Three Sujet Fragrances, Compared

Each Sujet fragrance centers on a single ingredient concept, but the three smell remarkably different from one another.

Le Foin was the brand’s first release. Foin simply means hay in French, and the fragrance takes the freshest, most literal approach to that idea: peppery green top notes, mineral freshness, and a linear, cut-grass character. Of the three, it’s the closest to a classic fresh fougère.

Fenaison followed as a continuation of the same raw material, but with a completely different accord. It opens with dried fruit and cinnamon before moving into hay absolute, tonka bean, and cocoa. The base settles into patchouli and labdanum. Where Le Foin is the field in July, Fenaison is the barn in September: warm, dense, and made for autumn and winter.

Âpre is the newest of the three and the first to move away from hay as its central material. Instead, it is built around immortelle, with bergamot and peppermint at the top, immortelle and scorched tea leaf at the heart, and tonka and moss at the base. It’s also the quietest of the three. The sillage stays closer to the skin, and Sujet designed it specifically with summer heat in mind rather than the cold-weather depth of Fenaison.

Which Sujet Perfume Should You Try First?

If you’re drawn to warmth and want a fragrance with real projection, Fenaison is the strongest introduction to what Sujet does well. It’s the most fully realized of the three and the easiest to understand on a first wear. If you want something lighter, or you’re shopping for summer, Âpre is the better entry point. Its lower sillage makes it more forgiving if you’re new to niche perfumery. Immortelle is also a gentler introduction than the hay absolute pushed to its regulatory ceiling in Fenaison. Le Foin remains the most straightforward choice if you want a clean, fresh, no-frills interpretation of hay without the complexity the other two build around it.
