10 Parisian Style Staples You Can Add to Your Closet Right Now
Parisian style doesn’t require replacing your entire wardrobe, it requires adding a handful of pieces you’ll actually reach for. After 14 years of watching what Parisian women wear on repeat rather than what shows up in a single Fashion Week moment, these are the ten pieces I’d tell anyone to add first.
This is a list to shop from, not a system to follow. If you want the fuller approach to building a complete, curated wardrobe rather than adding individual pieces, see my French Capsule Wardrobe guide.

The Foundational Layers
1. The Lightweight Cashmere Sweater
A round-neck pullover in a neutral — cream, camel, grey, navy — gets worn year-round in Paris: layered in spring, draped over the shoulders in summer, tucked into trousers by fall. Look for a fine gauge that skims rather than clings. I go deeper on where to find this in my guide to French cashmere brands, which covers Kujten, Loulou de Saison, and Alexandra Golovanoff along with a few others worth knowing.
→ Where to shop: Kujten, Bompard, Loulou de Saison, Alexandra Golovanoff, Gérard Darel
2. The Perfect Tailored Trousers
Parisian trousers are fluid and high-waisted rather than stiffly suited, and for many women here they replace jeans in the everyday rotation. Beige, navy, or charcoal in a wool or cotton blend is the safest starting point.
→ Where to shop: Soeur, A.P.C., COS, Vanessa Bruno
3. The Crisp White Button-Down
Slightly oversized, slightly masculine, always pressed. It gets tucked into jeans, tied over a dress, or layered under a blazer depending on the day. Cotton poplin or a fine twill gives it the right structure.
→ Where to shop: Alain Figaret, Sézane, COS, Zara (men’s section, size down)
4. The Great Pair of Jeans
Most French women I know wear one or two pairs of jeans on rotation rather than cycling through several — a classic wash, a straight or slightly flared cut, minimal distressing.
→ Where to shop: Agolde, Sézane, COS, Toteme
The Bags
5. The Structured Leather Bag, No Loud Logo
One excellent daily bag, carried for years rather than replaced each season, is the closest thing to a Parisian rule I’d actually defend. Clean hardware, supple leather, quiet branding. I’ve owned my Loewe Puzzle for a decade and it still looks current — for more bag-specific direction, I wrote a full guide to Parisian handbag styles.
→ Where to shop: Celine, Saint Laurent, Soeur, Lemaire, Loewe, Gérard Darel
6. The Elevated Tote
A second bag to fit your laptop on the go or for weekend travel earns its keep once the daily bag is set. Toteme, Saint Laurent, and Jil Sander all make totes that hold their shape rather than sagging by midweek.
→ Where to shop: Toteme, Goyard, Saint Laurent, Vanessa Bruno, Jérôme Dreyfuss
The Jewelry
7. Signature Gold Jewelry
French women I know tend to invest in one or two pieces worn daily rather than rotating a large collection. Usually gold pieces, often chosen with intention or passed down. Yvonne Léon, Sophie d’Agon, and Stone Paris all work in this quieter, everyday register. I go deeper on where to find this in my guide to contemporary Parisian jewelry designers, which covers exactly this kind of everyday, solid-gold piece.
→ Where to shop: Yvonne Léon, Sophie d’Agon, Stone Paris, Charlotte Chesnais, Agatha Paris, Sézane
The Outerwear
8. The Classic Trench
A genuine year-round piece in Paris, not just a fall placeholder. Choose one that hits mid-calf and drapes when left open rather than a shorter, stiffer cut.
→ Where to shop: A.P.C., Uniqlo, Lemaire, vintage Burberry, Sézane, Gérard Darel
The Shoes
Shoes are where Parisian practicality shows up most — I’ve written a full breakdown of the shoes Parisians actually wear day to day, but two categories are worth calling out on their own here.
9. The Flat That Isn’t Basic
Loafers, Mary Janes, real ballet flats — the common thread is no foam sole and no logo, just a considered shape in real leather.
→ Where to shop: Repetto, Carel, Sézane

10. The Heeled Ankle Boot
A genuine fall-and-winter essential, worn constantly with jeans, midi skirts, and tights. Black or brown, leather or suede.
→ Where to shop: Rouje, Aeyde, Saint Laurent
Bonus: The Sleek Sneaker. Sneakers have faded slightly here but still earn a place for travel days and casual weekends — a clean leather or canvas pair in white, beige, or grey. Veja is the obvious French pick; I go into more detail in my guide to chic French sneakers.
Start With One
You don’t have to live in Paris to dress like you’ve been here 14 years. Pick the one staple from this list you’re missing, buy it well, and wear it constantly before adding the next. If you want the fuller system rather than a piece-by-piece approach, the French Capsule Wardrobe guide walks through building a complete, curated wardrobe from scratch.
